Andy pays tribute to Des Kelly

Well-known showband star Des Kelly has passed away after battling illness for the last number of years.

The Turloughmore native is best known as a founding member of the Capitol Showband but also worked as a music promoter and manager.
Tributes from across the Irish music industry are pouring in this morning for Des, described as a music visionary and a gentleman.
Prior to his illness Des Kelly worked as a music presenter on Galway Bay fm for twenty years, joining the radio station when it opened in 1989.
His warm style of presenting and knowledge of music won him many listeners.

Andy had this to say about the good man:

Fellow folkie Mick Hanly added his fond memories of Des to Andy’s post:

Update from Andy: Gigs with Lunny & RTE Radio Appearance

I'm just coming to the end of a long, long tour of UK and Germany. 43 gigs in 59 days. It's been great but the number of kilometres driven would astonish ....even me! Have day off today!
Under some pressure to publicise forthcoming gigs with Donal Lunny!!
We are playing THE MAGISTORIUM in South Anne Street in Dublin on 1st December and would love to see a full house! Ditto for FOXFORD WOOLEN MILLS on December 3rd. While I'm at it, tune into RTE on November 30th at 4pm and hear us playing a couple of songs and talking about the latest Planxty release. More happening the following week but I'll give this a rest for the moment.

Current Tour to be Andy’s Final US Tour…

“Starting tomorrow for my last tour of the US. As ever, looking forward to seeing so many good friends and enjoying their company and the pleasure of playing for good people. It’s my last tour because the U.S. powers that be just make it too difficult. From the 30 percent withholding tax, to the tiresome, expensive and ultimately humiliating application for a work visa – which very often doesn’t come through in time.  Most of all, to the totally unfair disparity between a US musician touring Ireland and all this s*** we have to go through to tour over there, enough is enough.  Age is a factor and so is political uncertainty.
Still, be good to see you all!
Lots of love,
